During Randy’s graduate studies, Randy and Fab crossed paths. When Randy's data acquisition system malfunctioned, his search for a solution led him to the world of open-source hardware, and he was immediately captivated. Fab, on the other hand, had developed an app that seamlessly interfaced with these open-source microprocessors. Impressively, this system could substitute Randy’s costly $15,000 National Instrument's Data Acquisition setup.

Frustrated by the sluggish pace of technology transfer in commercializing his innovative surgical sensor, Randy sought alternatives. His eyes were opened to the possibilities of entrepreneurship and crowdfunding during a presentation at a medical device forum where he got introduced to Kickstarter.

Randy and Fab considered harnessing their combined tech prowess to start a venture. After weighing several options, Fab proposed a straightforward project: a garage door opener powered by iBeacon technology. Randy, seeing its potential, spearheaded the development of what would become 'Garage Beacon'. The first prototypes emerged from his parent’s barn, and soon after, a Kickstarter campaign was launched. The initiative was a hit, achieving full funding not once, but twice.

Producing Garage Beacon became a global effort, aided by a distributed team spanning multiple continents. This journey wasn't without its challenges, from leadership hurdles to mastering startup management and customer relations. Yet, it ignited a burning passion in Randy. The realization that an individual, armed with just a laptop, could take an idea from inception to global sales was transformative.
