Solar Screen
A portable, lightweight sunscreen sprayer pack that lasts 6 hours and withstands extreme temperatures and conditions.
the objective.
Develop an MVP for a portable and compact device that atomizes liquid sunscreen for use at events.
The device needs to:
Withstand extreme temperatures and environments
Intuitively operated
Zero clogging and other failures
Run-time of over 6 hours
the technologies deployed.
Atomizing nozzle
Hall-effect switching
18650 power bank (run time of 6 hours)
3D printing case
User modulated pressure by inline bulb pump
the story.
Randy met Darion at a pitch event in Columbus, Ohio. Darion's startup was promising and he had the heart and passion to get something out but his MVP was a complete mess. He needed help from an engineer badly. The device met none of Darion's requirements. He had wasted time and money on an incompetent engineering team at a time where his startup needed this device to critically to evaluate its viability for future investors. Randy took over the project and completely redesigned the device. The first step was to actually atomize the sunscreen. The old design simply squirted out sunscreen in a scream that left customers grossed out to say the very least. The next issue to tackle was the battery life of the device. The old method used NiCad batteries which had a maximum runtime of 20 minutes. Randy switched this out to a bank of 18650 lithium-ion batteries which brought the working time up to about 10 hours. The triggering system also needed to be redesigned because it was operating in an oily and dirty environment.
The implementation of a hall-effect sensor was used to keep the environment and the switching method completely separate. The new design also called for a custom machine shop to be utilized which Randy found, negotiated pricing while also evaluating the shop's ability to scale if needed in the future. All deliverables were hit and the device has made its way onto the news, multiple festivals, and all along the west coast.
